From trainee consultant to Director before the age of 30, Tom's journey at Recruit UK is a story of ambition, adaptability and a genuine passion for helping people succeed.
Recently sat down with our Director, and someone I’ve had the pleasure of calling a friend for the past 19 years, as part of my plan to show you, our trusted clients and amazing candidates, not just what we do as a company, but who we are.
Tom’s had a particularly interesting career path here at Recruit UK. As one of our longest-serving members of the team, he’s climbed his way up from a fresh-faced trainee straight out of university to Director, helping shape the business into what it is today.
Twelve years after joining Recruit UK, Tom can still vividly remember what attracted him to recruitment in the first place.
esh out of university and eager to build a career with clear progression opportunities, he was drawn to the combination of sales, relationship building and helping people achieve their goals.
“I was always drawn to a sales-type role, but I also enjoyed helping people, so recruitment seemed like the perfect mix of the two.”
That decision proved to be the right one.
After joining as a trainee consultant, Tom quickly progressed through the ranks, becoming a Senior Consultant within just two years. However, his career wasn’t a straight line. Early on, he took a seven-month sabbatical, travelling across Southern Africa in a 4×4 – an experience that gave him a fresh perspective before returning to Recruit UK and stepping into leadership.
“Sometimes the best career move is taking a step back to gain a wider perspective.”
On his return, Tom moved into a Regional Manager position before being appointed Director in 2019 – a milestone he still considers one of his proudest achievements.
When I asked how his role has evolved over the years, Tom reflected on how different life is now compared to his days as a consultant.
What started as a role focused solely on personal performance and individual targets has transformed into one centred around leadership, development and supporting others to succeed.
“The biggest shift is going from focusing on your own wins to helping other people achieve theirs.”
Like many great leaders, Tom admits management wasn’t something that came naturally overnight.
“It’s definitely a skill you learn over time. You have to learn how to invest in people and help them grow. There are different styles of managing; it’s not a one-size-fits-all – you have to adapt your style and learn the person, not just the process. I used to be a lot more fiery than I am now.”
Despite the changes in both his role and the wider business, one thing has remained constant throughout his 12 years at Recruit UK: the culture.
For Tom, it’s the reason he’s stayed.
“The business has changed a lot over the years and gone through many different stages of growth, but the culture has always stayed the same. It’s always been a place that genuinely cares about its people.”
“People genuinely want to see each other succeed here.”
That collaborative culture is something Tom believes sets Recruit UK apart, creating an environment where employees feel supported, valued and encouraged to develop their careers, whilst also supporting their colleagues to develop theirs.
Of course, recruitment itself has changed significantly during his time in the industry, particularly within Financial Planning.
Tom has seen the profession evolve from a more transactional, sales-focused environment into a respected long-term career path where relationships, expertise and advice take centre stage.
For him, the most rewarding aspect has always been the impact recruitment can have on people’s lives.
“Placing someone into a role and seeing how that changes their career, their confidence and sometimes even their personal life is incredibly rewarding.”
One story that stands out involved an Adviser who was initially reluctant to consider a particular opportunity
After taking the time to understand their concerns and challenge their thinking, Tom successfully placed them into a Director-level role, securing a £35,000 salary increase in the process.
Six years later, they’re still thriving within the business and have progressed multiple times since.
It’s stories like this that remind him why he loves what he does.
Away from individual success stories, Tom is equally proud of the impact he’s had internally.
Whether it’s helping guide the business through significant periods of change, including a change of ownership and company restructure, or watching junior consultants develop into some of Recruit UK’s highest-performing team members, seeing others succeed remains one of his greatest motivations.
“Placing someone into a role and seeing how that changes their career, their confidence and sometimes even their personal life is incredibly rewarding.”
As our conversation came to an end, I asked Tom for the best piece of career advice he’s ever received.
His answer was simple.
“Be patient in the early stages of your career and treat everything as a learning opportunity.”
He also believes that if something isn’t working, you shouldn’t simply accept it.
“If you don’t like something, don’t just deal with it. Lean into it. Change it. Drive a better outcome and remember the power of your own voice.”
After twelve years, countless placements, major business milestones and a leadership journey that began as a trainee consultant, it’s easy to see why Tom continues to be such an important part of Recruit UK’s story.
And perhaps the biggest takeaway from our conversation is that success isn’t always about how quickly you progress – it’s about how many people you bring with you along the way.
I can honestly say that Tom has played a part in every one of our journeys, and we all owe a piece of where we are today to his support, encouragement and belief in us.
