Westeros is a harsh world to live in, filled with murder, betrayal, violence and dragons! With all the swords, sorcery and Starks, you might think there is little that you can learn about navigating the real world but landing your dream job can sometimes feel as difficult as taking the Iron Throne!
Here are seven lessons in job hunting from the Seven Kingdoms!
1. Build Your Alliances
Just like Jon Snow and Sansa, who are building their army to take back Winterfell, when job hunting you need to build your network to make the most of all opportunities on offer. An alliance with someone working in a creative company could be the edge you need to land a job over your competitors.
2. Know Your Brand
“I’m Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons”… You’d give her the job, wouldn’t you?
Knowing your personal brand and what you stand for and being able to communicate it will show your potential employers what you are all about and how you are a great fit for the role.
Being able to identify your unique selling point and what makes you different from other candidates will also help you become a more successful candidate… three dragons would be a pretty good advantage to have!
3. Your Reputation is Everything
“A Lannister always pays his debts”… a reputation that has helped Tyrion secure many alliances and bargains with people throughout Westeros. Without this reputation, Tyrion would probably be dead by now!
Just like a Lannister you need to ensure that you have a great reputation and that you uphold it. Whether your reputation is an amazing social media presence or always delivering top results in a timely manner, make sure you maintain and enforce that.
4. Become a Master of Whispers
Lord Varys was born a slave but worked his way up to Lord of Whispers in Kings Landing by keeping his ear to the ground and trading information on different plots and secrets in the kingdom.
Knowing your industry and areas that are growing or developing will allow you to identify the gaps in your skills and how you can improve them. It also shows how passionate you are about your role and that you would be a valuable asset to an employer’s team.
5. Find Strong Mentors
Bran was trained by the Three Eyed Raven to develop his skills to the best of his ability. Daenerys listened to those who were older and wiser than her to help inform her decisions and grow as a queen. Mentors are just as important in the world of work and they can help you develop and grow and might even present some new and exciting opportunities for you.
6. Resurrect yourself after a defeat!
If Jon Snow can come back from the dead after being stabbed six times by members of the Night’s Watch, you can bounce back from a rejection email! You won’t need a drawn out ceremony performed by the Red Woman, all you need is some self belief. There will be a lot of “No”s along the way to your dream job but it’s important to learn from each one and improve your applications.
Now that you’ve gathered all the knowledge that the Seven Kingdoms has to offer, journey beyond The Wall and land that dream job!
